If you wish,

your character can gain skills beyond those offered by profession trainers. A few powers are gained for "free", but most come only with precious training points spent to gain them.

Taking disciplines can enrich a character, but can also potentially cripple or "gimp" a character, should the "wrong" disciplines be chosen. For example, the Huntress profession grants a summoned Panther pet, which can attain level 45 when fully trained. Should the Huntress take a Summoner Discipline, the pet gained by this discipline could only attain a maximum of lvl 35.

Taking a Discipline Rune is not required, and it is true that sometimes the best choice, for your character, is to take no discipline. However, one should always keep discipline powers in mind while making a character template.

Three runeslots in each character are reserved for Discipline Runes.

Once inserted, Disc. Runes cannot be extracted.

Disc. Runes have race, class and profession restrictions.

Disc. Rune powers can be refined like profession/class powers/skill.

20th lvl is required before Disc. insertion is possible.

Specific, named mobs must be killed in order to acquire Disc. Runes.

Taking a Discipline can be a great way to enhance your roleplaying!
